History of the Pigskin Jamboree/Financial Aid Workshop

In December 1990, Andrew E. Edwards saw a need and took action. He brought together high school senior football players who wanted to attend college. He invited collegiate football coaches to meet these student athletes. Fifteen years later over 4,500 high school senior athletes have gone to college by participating in the Annual Pigskin Jamboree Workshop. The Pigskin Jamboree Workshop bridges the gap between the student athlete and the collegiate football recruiter. There were less than 100 high school football players who attended the first Pigskin Jamboree Workshop and only 15 local college and university recruiters attended.

As the years passed, the Pigskin Jamboree Workshop grew to be an event which high school senior football players and collegiate recruiters look forward to attending each year at Ebenezer AME Church. Over the past 15 years our area high school senior football players have earned over 25 million dollars in financial aid and athletic scholarships. At the 14th Annual Pigskin Jamboree, Coach Danny Hayes brought 21 high school senior football players from Gwynn Parks High School and today 18 of those 21 are now attending a college/university on a football scholarship. Over 70% of the student athletes who attend the Jamboree each year receive some form of assistance through an athletic scholarship or financial aid.

Presently the Pigskin Jamboree workshop averages 250-500 area student athletes along with 50-60 major collegiate football organizations who represent levels of competition ranging from Division I through Division III athletic programs. Over 89 different colleges and universities have participated in the Jamboree since its inception in 1990. Recruiters have come from 15 different states and as far away as Texas. The Pigskin Jamboree is sanctioned by the NCAA and abides by NCAA recruiting rules and regulations. The Pigskin Jamboree also includes a Financial Aid workshop to assist parents in completing financial aid applications. It is conducted by volunteers from the Prince George's Community College Financial Aid Office .Our goal is to motivate and get every student in the Maryland/DC Metro Area to be recruited and/or become aware of college opportunities.
